How to Audit Your Brand Consistency: A Step-by-Step Guide

Sumit SharmaMay 30, 20266 min

What Is a Brand Audit and Why Does It Matter?

As your startup grows, your brand footprint expands. You launch new landing pages, set up email templates, build product dashboards, and publish social media graphics. Over time, visual drift inevitably sets in. Colors shift slightly, different font pairings appear, and your logo gets stretched or misaligned.

A brand audit is a structured review of all your brand touchpoints. It ensures your visual and strategic identity remains consistent, professional, and aligned across every surface.

Step 1: Audit Logo Placement and Usage

Your logo is the primary anchor of your brand. Check these rules:

  • Logo Clear Space — Ensure the logo has enough breathing room (at least 15-20% of its height) and is not cramped by text or navigation borders.
  • Background Contrast — The logo should stand out. Use the dark-mode variant on dark backgrounds and the primary variant on light ones.
  • Favicon Alignment — Verify that your 16x16 and 32x32 favicons match your primary brand icon mark.

Step 2: Audit Color Palette and Contrast Ratios

Color consistency is key to recognition, but color accessibility is critical to usability.

  • Check WCAG Contrast Ratios — Ensure all body text meets the 4.5:1 ratio against its background. Buttons and input borders should meet a 3:1 ratio.
  • Review Accent Usage — Verify that your accent color is reserved exclusively for primary Call-to-Actions (CTAs) and important highlights. If everything is accented, nothing stands out.
  • Check Shade Ramps — Keep your Tailwind neutrals (gray, slate, or stone) consistent across your landing pages and product dashboards.

Step 3: Audit Typography and Font Pairings

Consistent type rhythm makes your product look highly professional.

  • Count the Font Families — You should use a maximum of 2 to 3 font families (e.g., one display font for headings, one readable sans-serif for body text, and one monospace for code).
  • Audit the Type Scale — Check that font sizes and line heights are standardized. For instance, headings should have a tighter line height (1.1 to 1.2) than body text (1.5 to 1.7).

Step 4: Audit Visual Elements and Component Styles

  • Border Radius Harmony — If your cards are rounded-2xl, your buttons should not be sharp-edged. Standardize your corner radiuses.
  • Icon Style — Do not mix outline and solid icons on the same page. Choose one cohesive style and stick to it.
